KITA is campaigning to reduce mixed waste

In HSY’s 2024 study, about 70 percent of household mixed waste in the Helsinki metropolitan area consisted of waste that could have been sorted for separate collection. Proper sorting increases material recovery and can reduce waste management costs, as treating mixed waste is more expensive than sorted waste streams. The impact on an individual housing company’s costs depends on its waste volumes and the billing criteria used by the company.

The waste chutes are meant for biowaste, cardboard, paper, plastic, and mixed waste. The waste room, on the other hand, is meant for glass, metal, bulky mixed waste (not furniture), and oversized cardboard.
